FUNERAL MASS, 8TH JUNE 2012.
                      Rites at the entrance of the Church
PRIEST: The Lord be with you.
All: And with your spirit:
PRIEST: Praise be to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ; the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation. He comforts us in all our afflictions and thus enable us to comfort those who are in trouble, with the same consolation we have received from him.

ALL; Blessed be God, the father of our Lord Jesus Christ.(The priest sprinkles the body with Holy Water saying)
PRIEST: I bless the body of Chief Anthony Nweke with the holy water that recalls his baptism of which St Paul writes: All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into death, by baptism into his death, we were buried together with him, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by glory of the Father, we too, might live a new life. For if we have been united with him by likeness to his resurrection.

LET US PRAY:
Lord, we humbly as your mercy, accept the soul of your servant Chief Anthony Nweke, forgive the sins he committed through human frailty. Free him from the bonds of death and admit him into everlasting life, Through Christ our Lord, Amen. (The body is the taken into the Church)

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON:
As Jesus died and rose again, so God will raise up with him those who have died in Christ. As we all died in Adam, we shall all live again in Christ. Alleluia.

OPENING PRAYER
Let us pray; Almighty God, our father, we firmly believe that your son died and rose to life, we pray for your servant Anthony Nweke, who died in Christ. Raise him at the last day to share the glory of the risen Christ, who lives, and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.

LITURGY OF THE WORD
FIRST READING
A READING FROM THE BOOK OF
Daniel 12:1-3
The angel wearing linen clothes said, at the time, the great Angel Michael, who guards your people, will appear. Then there will be a time of troubles, the worst since nations first came into existence. When that time comes, all the people of your nation whose name are written in Gods book will be saved. Many of those who have already died will live again, some will enjoy eternal life, and some will suffer eternal disgrace.  The wise leaders will shine with all the brightness of the sky. And those who have thought many people to do what is right will shine like the stars forever.
This is the word of God
Responsorial Psalm. (PS 23)
RESPONSE: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
1)       The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are pastures where he gives me reposes, near restful waters he leads me to revive my drooping spirit. R
2)       He guides me along the right path; He is true to His name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness, no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff, with these, you give me comfort. R
3)       You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foe, my cup is overflowing. R
4)       Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life in the Lord’s own house shall I dwell forever and ever

Second Reading;
A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Thessalonians 4:13-18
We want you to be quite certain, brothers, about those who have fallen asleep, to make sure that you do not grieve for them, as others do, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and in the same way, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. We can tell you this from the Lords own teaching, that we who are still alive for the Lord’s coming will not have any advantage over those who have fallen. At the signal given by the voice of the Archangel and triumphant of God, the Lord himself will come down from heaven, those who have died in Christ will be the first to rise, and only after that shall we who remain alive be taken up in the clouds, together with them, to meet the Lord in the air. This is the way we shall be with the Lord forever. With such thoughts as these, then you should encourage one another.
This is the word of the Lord.

GOSPEL;
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John (John 17-27)
On arrival at Bethany, Jesus found that he has been in the tomb for four days already. Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem, and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to sympathize with them over their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus had come, she went to meet him.  Mary remained sitting in the house. Martha said to Jesus, if you had been here, my brother would not have died, but I know that, even now, whatever you ask of God, he will grant it. Jesus said; I am the resurrection. If anyone believes in me, even though he dies he will live, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this? Yes, Lord, said I believe that you are the Christ, the son of God, the one who was to come into this world.
This is the Gospel of the Lord

Prayer of the faithful

3)       For those suffering on account of bereavement that the generosity of their fellow Christian may give them new union and help them to relieve their anxiety.(R)

4)       For all who are gathered to pray for Chief Anthony Nweke, that we may live, act and speaking full realization that one day we shall be called upon to answer for our thoughts, words and actions.(R)

5)       For the sick and  suffering that Jesus Christ who showed mercy, bestow upon them every heavenly blessing and restore to them lasting health or mind and body.(R)
